It seems like everyone is a gold bug these days, but is it the right thing for you?

What Are The Chances?

With all this "end of the world" hype going on, maybe we should consider the chances. What are the chances of a civilization threatening event?

How Much Insurance Do I Need?

Insurance is an extremely broad topic. Hopefully this generalization on the different types and amounts will help straighten things out a bit.

Iraqi Dinar: Scam or Scoop?

Some say it's an easy way to make a million bucks! But do you understand currency markets enough to take advantage?

The financial world we live in is just as wild, if not more, than the mountains and woods we walk through. We are told that the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but we can feel that something is wrong. My unique financial background and survival passion make Financial Survivalist and excellent place to learn and share.

Sun Block Not Allowed At Elementary School?

Recently an article has been making the recirculated media rounds about a couple of elementary school students who were not allowed to use sunblock during a field day.

Read the article at MSNBC.

I feel it is good to draw attention to stupid policies required because we tollerate frivolous lawsuits. It is ridiculous that the girls were not allowed to use sunblock. However, I think there are some things to consider.

  1. The mother didn't apply sunblock in the morning
  2. The girls are fine
  3. I'm sure the mother knew the policy beforehand, it's not that unheard of (my wife is a school teacher and all birthday treats MUST be store bought)
  4. I'm sure there was shade available. Come on, the girls wanted to play!
  5. They went to the hospital? Seriously?

When I was young, I fell asleep on a raft at a lake and got 2nd degree sunburns on my arms. I had to wrap them in gauze for two weeks. Painful? Yes. Hospital visit? NO! Don't blame the teacher, the principle, or the district. Did my parents blame the scout leader?  NO!

This is so stupid. Why are we still talking about it?

Real Life Bug Out Scenario

Recently, extremely dry conditions in Utah brought on by an unusually dry winter, have fostered numerous wild fires. I haven't lived in Utah long, but I've never seen Utah on fire like this. Dozens of Fires are burning in Utah and unless something changes, dozens more will ignite.

The fires have already caused evacuations of several different residential communities; Eagle Mountain FireFire in Sanpete County, S. UtahMillard County. This made me think about the much fantasized bug out.

In an emergency situation, the last thing you want to do is "Bug Out." My friend at The Daily Prep made a good argument about this in "The Fallacy of Bugging Out." The fact is that all your preps, supplies, and storage are at home, not to mention shelter. You don't want to leave unless you have to. However, these fires have forced thousands to leave their homes not knowing if or when they will return.

Sometimes Bug Outs are real. Not that you'll likely be leaving your house on foot to live in the woods, but it is important that you are prepared to leave your home on a moments notice. Be prepared to gather the things that cannot be replaced: photos, journals, etc.

Have a plan. Be prepared. If you are prepared, you will not fear.

The Best Snare Scenario Ever!!!!

So I went camping, and the campground was infested with some sort prairie dogs. They had well established trails in the nearby grass, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to attempt using snares. I didn't catch anything, but I learned a lot.

  1. Floss isn't strong enough
  2. Fishing wire holds it's form and is hard to position
  3. You can never funnel traffic too much

Learn Liberty

I was just surfing the web and I found Learn Liberty on you tube. I cannot explain how awesome these guys are! Essentially it's a bunch of economists explaining the issues in simple english. Their goal is to educate the average person.

This is an excellent source of common sense for those who may lack it. It is also a good source to learn how the economy really works and how we can get on the right path. Below are a few of my favorite videos.

Rabbit Farming

Around the world rabbits are farmed as a common meat. In europe there are special breads of rabbit used for this. However, here in the united states, most rabbits are pets, and eating rabbits is left to the hunter/trapper.

However, rabbits are a great source of meat for self-reliant living and emergency prepping. They are easy and quickly bred, they grow fast, they eat veggie scraps and don't take up a lot of space. They poop great fertilizer for your garden and their skins make great clothing. They really are an amazing animal for any prepper.

Recently I did a youtube search about farming rabbits and I found the "Survival Doc" as he calls himself. I watched a 6 part series on how to raise rabbits for their meat and it is an excellent series. The survival doc touches on how to keep, grow, breed, kill and butcher the rabbits. He is very thorough, so if you get you get queasy at the sight of blood, I wouldn't watch past the third video.

Needless to say, the survival doc has gained a fan. I will definitely be watching more of his videos.
